TRACEY'S TABLE - Spring 2019

We are looking forward to swapping hats for sunglasses and also looking forward to the many exciting restaurants recently launched in London. Without mentioning the dreaded B-word, there are still many positives going on in the Capital’s restaurant scene and the last six months saw a plethora of superb new restaurants to sample. There are also several openings planned for the next few months ahead – the new Claridge’s restaurant, Davies & Brook by Daniel Humm and Will Guidara of Eleven Madison Park in NYC, Bob Bob Cité and HOME from Jason Atherton to name just a few. In the meantime, here are some of our favourite of the recently opened restaurants and eateries, serving what we think are some of the most interesting and inventive food in our sector right now.

Amongst the hottest trends, Middle Eastern cooking is more popular than ever before with an incredible variance across the menus of those leading the charge. From Turkey, Lebanon, Israel, Iran, from eateries focusing on one particular dish to restaurants offering a full-blown grilled feast with mezze and warm pita bread – there really is so much to try and be wowed by.

Adam Handling

Adam Handling, Chelsea

The Belmond Hotel, 75 Sloane St, SW1X 9SE

This wonderfully elegant dining space serving contemporary British cuisine in the heart of Chelsea combines Adam’s passion for the food of London with his distinctive and perfectly-executed cooking style. The menu showcases a fundamental commitment to sustainable practice and using the best seasonal produce and featuring some of Adam’s renowned signature creations. We were delighted to work with the Cadogan Estate on this project.

Sushisamba

Sushisamba, Covent Garden

35 The Market Building, WC2E 8RF

Continuing the foodie resurgence of Covent Garden Sushisamba is the icing on the cake, sitting aloft within Covent Garden’s historic Grade II listed Market Building is a beautiful glass dome and a “living ceiling” of plants and flowers above the dining area. Despite the vast size the atmosphere is still intimate, cosy and elegant. The food is as delectable as one would expect from any Sushisamba and is also a cocktail destination in its own right, with zero plastic credentials. DCL work with Covent Garden London the landlords on their food strategy.

Gloria

Gloria, Shoreditch

54-56 Great Eastern St, London EC2A 3QR

This new site from Parisian restaurant group Big Mamma can be found on the corner of Great Eastern Street in Shoreditch. Whilst the group is from France, they operate some of the best Italian restaurants in Paris and their first London offering is an Italian trattoria called Gloria. The interiors are inspired by the Italian island of Capri in the 1970s and the menu celebrates the best produce Italy has to offer. Much is made on site, such as fresh pasta, coffee, gelato, home-brewed beer and limoncello, and all delivered with a delicious sense of outrageousness!

Mrs Fogg's

Mrs Fogg's Maritime Club & Distillery, Broadgate

37 Broadgate Circle, London EC2M 2QS

Occupying a two-floor site in Broadgate Circle, the bar comes complete with its own gin distillery and serves up the Fogg group’s signature quirky cocktails and snacks. The spiced cocktails and the food offering are inspired by India, with the likes of Keralan fried chicken, sweet potato pani puri, and jackfruit biryani, all served in traditional tiffin boxes. The space is wonderfully designed to feel like an old liner. Additionally, the lower ground cargo room hosts some live artists, and you can escape from the crowds on the expansive outdoor terrace. Watch this space as DCL delivers more exciting eateries and bars for BL as part of the new Broadgate strategy.

Levan

Levan, Peckham

12-16 Blenheim Grove, London SE15 4QL

The long-awaited follow up from Nicholas Balfe (Salon in Brixton) who has worked alongside Isaac McHale of the Clove Club and James Lowe of Lyle’s, and has a fine track record of delivering food that’s precise, yet accessible. As sustainable as it is stylish, the carefully constructed menu of European bistro-style dishes from breakfast through dinner aims to re-purpose and re-use up to 90% of its waste, including turning herb stalks into ferments and infusions, and old milk into curd cheese. At the bar, Levan brings a selection of left-field, low-intervention wines and botanical cocktails with ingredients from their kitchen garden.

Orasay

Orasay, Notting Hill

31 Kensington Park Rd, W11 2EU

Modern cooking with big flavours from Jackson Boxer and Andrew Clarke, the chefs behind one of last year’s most feted new restaurant openings St Leonard’s in Shoreditch, and Brunswick House, Vauxhall. Inspired by Boxer’s childhood holidays in the Hebrides, the menu here has a strong emphasis on seafood. Fresh oysters, langoustine, scallops, razor clams, crabs and lobster arrive daily from the Scottish Isles, while the team’s organic farm in West Sussex will supply leaves, vegetables, honey and eggs. The wine list opens with half a dozen ‘on tap’ pours, delivered in kegs to maximise freshness, minimise carbon footprint.

P Franco

P Franco, Clapton

107 Lower Clapton Road, E5 0NP

P.Franco is an intimate wine bar resembling a Parisian caves à manger with Antipodean swag, cosmopolitan clientele and a Chinese cash-and-carry sign. This engaging Clapton bottle shop (focused on funky ‘natural’ vintages) has rotating chefs on six-month residencies, a solitary central table and a tiny two-stove induction hob. Behind these culinary decks they’ve had: Tim Spedding, (formerly Clove Club) William Gleave (Bright) and Giuseppe Lacorazza. Owner Phil Bracey’s care for the ‘community’ is endearing and has clearly spread by osmosis through the brilliant team, and this month have now opened a third site, Peg, on Morning Lane in Hackney.

Yeni

Yeni, Soho

In Turkish, the phrase yeni lokanta literally means ‘new restaurant’. Which is slightly ironic, because it means that Yeni Lokanta is no longer a yeni lokanta. It opened in Istanbul way back in 2013 and is one of those effortlessly cool places that also happens to be a magnet for awards, with a small trove of them going to the place’s head chef Civan Er. His new Soho spot features a menu much like the one found in the original space, with a blend of modernist cuisine and street food-style casual dishes.

Maison Bab

When Le Bab first opened in Kingly Court, Stephen Tozer and Ed Brunet put a new spin on the kebab. Now it’s got a bigger, loftier, grander sibling. Around a large open kitchen is counter seating where you can watch the eight-strong kebab menu created from scratch. Here you can expect to pay around £25 a head for a starter, kebab and beer plus there is also a very reasonable £10 lunch menu. A hidden fine dining restaurant - the Kebab Queen – is downstairs; a 10-seater space where executive chef Manu Canales (previously sous chef at the two Michelin-starred Le Gavroche) creates a six-course kebab-centric tasting menu.

Collaboration between renowned Chef Assaf Granit of The Palomar and The Barbary and British designer Tom Dixon. Offering All Day Dining, with 360-degree views over Granary Square and newly regenerated parts of London; the 160 cover restaurant has a roof top terrace, outside dining area and an open kitchen layout throughout two floors. Going beyond a typical restaurant offering, Coal Office is a place where you can experience fresh, creative food in a variety of beautifully designed and atmospheric spaces, where the provenance is explained, the tableware is available to buy, and the recipes are shared.

Berenjak

Berenjak, Soho

27 Romilly St, Soho, London W1D 5AL

New Iranian restaurant spearheaded by founder and former Gymkhana chef Kian Samyani and inspired by the kebab joints of Tehran, Iran’s capital. The real influence however comes from backers JKS Restaurants (the owners of Gymkhana), who have created a Middle Eastern equivalent of their Sri Lankan smash-hit Hoppers. As at no-bookings Hoppers, staff take your mobile number and text you when your table is available; waiting over a Martini in Soho is no hardship when a meal at this Aladdin’s cave of a restaurant is the reward.

Bancone

Bancone, Covent Garden

39 William IV St, WC2N 4DD

The brainchild of ex-Locanda Locatelli chef Louis Korovilas, Bancone is a pasta specialist evident from the front window where the kitchen team hand-rolling are dough. The theatrical element then continues inside courtesy of an open kitchen and a dining counter. The past year has seen an influx of pasta restaurants in the capital, but Bancone's delicious food, buzzy atmosphere and fair pricing makes this Covent Garden newcomer somewhere worth parting with your dough. It will be joined by Nutshell as part of a delivery of a collective of new restaurants in this area on behalf of Shaftesbury.

Lino

Lino, City

90 Bartholomew Close, EC1A 7EB

A former linoleum factory near St Bart's has been turned into a restaurant by the team behind Kitty Hawk; former head chef at The Dairy, Richard Falk, is behind the stoves. Everything is made in house from bread to spirits. This is a stylish proposition and the menu a timely snapshot of London dining culture: it’s big on fermentation and pickling, it champions vegetables alongside meat – seen in the pairing of flank steak with the humble likes of watercress and horseradish and the menu lends itself to sharing-style dining. Fair pricing and cool, casual staff add to Lino’s appeal; make sure to save space for a slice of the croissant bread-and-butter pudding.

Market Hall

Market Hall, Victoria

191 Victoria St, Westminster, SW1E 5NE

A new sibling to the original Market Hall site in Fulham, this iteration is a vast, two-storeyed temple to street food, now planted in the archways of the old Edwardian arcade opposite Victoria station. The launch line-up of 12 kitchens includes Gopal's Corner from the Roti King team, serving up rotis, dosas and curries, while Koya Ko (from the Koya gang) turns out freshly-made udon and dashi. Other traders you’ll find include Super Tacos from the Breddos team and Reuben sandwiches from Monty’s Deli. To make your lunchtime seamless, they’re also launching an app through which you can pre-order your dishes.

sun and 13 antons

Sarap at the Sun & 13 Cantons, Carnaby

1 Great Pulteney Street, Soho, W1F 9NG

The Sun & 13 Cantons is known for showcasing pop-up royalty - many of its alumni have gone on to open permanent sites, such as Darjeeling Express and soon-to-be Chef’s Table star, Asma Khan. Until 15 April, you can sample Sarap Filipino Barbeque and Lechon by Ferdinand Montoya. The signature dish is lechon - Filipino slow-roasted pork belly - with thin, brittle crackling, served with a mound of pickled carrot and daikon, coconut vinegar seasoned with bird’s eye chilli; and a version of the Filipino “all purpose” barbecue sauce - a pork liver, all spice berry, vinegar, and sugar condiment, the perfect foil to the pork itself. It’s a great education in Filipino dining habits (the sanctity of rice, the importance of DIY dips and accompaniments), and described by the Evening Standard as an "intensely pleasurable, unprissy way of eating. The Sun may have done it again."
